How business moms can beat the blues

Working at home, especially as business moms, can get hectic pretty quickly. In most cases, there are no other adults to interact with. This may not seem like a big deal at first. However, once the “honeymoon” period is over, cabin fever begins.

Panic develops into resentment in some cases, all too often directed towards children. This resentment can also extend to the marital relationship (for married mothers). Most of the time, many mothers will get depressed or at least feel down.

How do business moms fight the blues?

It is necessary to fight against this depression, anxiety and general stress. Here are some ways business moms can put an end to their blues:

  • Find other moms to connect with. Having an adult conversation is something that many moms who choose this career miss out on early on and don’t understand why they end up frustrated and crazy about the cabin.
  • Try to find a babysitter to take a break from time to time and meet up with adult friends. This means that you can dress and feel quite regularly, something that is sorely missed.
  • Have play dates with other mothers and their children of a similar age, if possible. This alleviates two needs: her needs as a mother who would like to know that she is not alone in her plight, and the needs of her children who would like to have a friend to bond with.
  • Get in the habit of enjoying your kids, whether it’s family movie night or a day trip to the zoo. This gets them out of “nuisance” mode and back into the little people mode you enjoy.
  • Be sure to exercise regularly to combat stress. It’s easy to get into a routine without any exercise, but fighting stress is much easier when you’re in shape than when you’re not.
  • Take a vacation or day drip once a quarter at least. The key here is to regularly relax and relieve stress, so making sure you do that is paramount.

The key is to feel like a woman and enjoy the freedom you have as an adult.

Feeling trapped inside is easy for do-gooder moms. In addition to feeling trapped by the same closed walls, many who are new to the business world feel trapped by children all too often. Accept it: being a mother is not a piece of cake, it is difficult.

Making time to get ready, whether it’s for a date or just because it’s what you need to do to feel like an adult again, will help you feel less trapped and more free.

It’s also important to note that having a bit of variety chases away the blues. Having the same walls staring back at you with the same masses to clean all day won’t have the best effect on your mood or sanity. Take some time to mix things up a bit.

I eat? Taking a day trip to a local landmark that allows tours. Take your kids to see how milk is produced at a local dairy or show them a historical site in your neighborhood. Sitting at home with just the groceries and the bank to take it out with is a recipe for disaster.

What business moms have said they miss most from their day job is the change of scenery, socialization, and intellectual stimulation that they would receive by virtue of being in a complex work environment.

Maternity is in itself a complex work situation – But with business moms, this age of parenting will make it hard to adjust unless you can take some action to find other moms to talk to about whatever’s on your mind.

Getting back to feeling like a “fancy” will help all business moms combat feelings of being trapped or denied some intellectual fulfillment.
