Nintendo has created a game controller that combines the functionality of a remote control with the latest motion sensing technology. The result is the Wii Remote, sometimes referred to as the “Wimote.” The Wii Remote allows the player to interact with the games being played on the screen through its optical sensor systems and accelerometers. For example, if you’re playing a driving game, the Wii Remote will act as a steering wheel, while in a tennis game it becomes a tennis racket. The wireless controller sends information to the Wii console using bluetooth technology. This same technology also allows other Wii Remotes to be used to play the same game, making the Wii gaming experience truly multiplayer.

Nintendo has now released an accessory for the Wii Remote, called the Wii Motion Plus. This update connects to the Wii Remote and improves its functionality by detecting other human movements, such as turning the wrist. The advantages of this will soon be seen by lightsaber players of the new “Star Wars” game and by those playing a game of Frisbee. The ultra-responsive Wii Motion Plus will be bundled with Wii Sports Resort, which will contain additional games such as sword fighting and jet skis. The Wii Remote has helped Nintendo catch up with Microsoft’s Xbox 360. This advantage should continue with the release of Nintendo’s Wii Speak microphone to tie into its new Animal Crossing game. This, combined with Wii Music, will give Wii players a huge variety of completely different games to choose from.

The Wii is not only a great gaming device, but it’s also a great platform for other types of media. One can listen to music and many Nintendo Wii players have even turned their Wii into their own movie theater. I personally feel that the cost of store bought Wii games is too high and have looked for other ways to get the most out of my Wii console. Luckily, I found a place where I download unlimited movies, games, and music to my Wii at almost zero cost.
