Magical Mystical Miracles Part III – My dog Suki changed shape from shorter nails
Our puppy Suki was about 3 months old when my ex and I visited a friend’s house. When we held her to cut her nails, she squirmed and my ex cut into her flesh. As Suki walked away from her, I watched in horror as the drops of blood fell onto our friend’s rug. Shamefully, I lost it. I started crying hysterically and uncontrollably. I was sure that his carelessness was the direct cause of him losing an arm in a past life (do you think I’m kidding?).
Perhaps it goes without saying that, as a result of my hysteria, Suki seriously disliked cutting her nails, to the point of panicking. She was so freaked out by the whole nail incident, combined with the vet “cutting off” her tail before I caught her (that’s another story) that she would hide under the bed at just a glimpse of any implement of metal.
The next time we tried to clip her nails, Suki was about a year old and 75 pounds. Pure muscle, her nails were a definite problem. Seeing her mounting terror in hers eyes as we held her down, I asked my ex-husband to think for a moment and asked if immobilizing her was the right thing to do. We both got “no”. So I told Suki that we wouldn’t force her, but that she somehow had to manage her nails so no one would get hurt. I commanded the now famous words: “Whoever you are in this puppy body, if this isn’t something we have to go through, then she manifests shorter nails!”
Overnight, her nails were the perfect length – smooth, no rough edges!” I almost didn’t believe my eyes, but I had 2 other witnesses who lived in the house who verified this. (PS for all of you who think that she must have filed them down on some concrete; we live in Florida on sandy roads and she never left the carpeted house; but she has the right to stick with her logical explanations).
While I had read stories of great beings and sages who transformed their physical structure to become taller, thinner, shorter, etc. He had never personally witnessed this shapeshifting ability. And I don’t know exactly what made me think of calling on Suki to access that great siddhi, or spiritual power, at that time. Except I’d seen and felt her extraordinary Presence many times, and I trusted we weren’t supposed to force it, so I invoked the only other way I could think of: a miracle.
For over 8 years Suki manifested short nails in this magical way. I had to get her attention maybe 4 more times when I noticed they were getting long. She would just get her attention, remind her of that original conversation, and say, “Whoever you are in that doggy body, if you don’t need to go through a physical nail trim, then handle it yourself and create short nails.” Overnight, they would always return to the perfect length.
However, all this changed when she was 8 and a half years old. I noticed that her nails were long again and I had a feeling that it was time to face the demon of nail trimming. It became clear to me that Suki had released her fear, but she was still afraid that she would bleed me. I had to go buy a trimmer because she didn’t even have one anymore.
One day, I was very collected and felt brave enough to try a trim again. I had tried to sneak up on her before, and it always backfired and I lost a lot of trust with her. So I knew I had to go straight in and show her what she was doing and get my anxiety under control first. That was the key: manage my emotions so as not to trigger her fear.
It was very empty and I was able to get close to it with the clippers, a miracle in itself. She watched intently, but she didn’t run off as usual. As I wrapped them around her fingernail and was ready to press the blade down, I thought “I wonder if I’m doing it right” and my stomach knotted. That was all it took for Suki to get under the bed. However, the sequence was now very clear to me…a worried thought, a feeling of inadequacy and a worry about hurting her, and she was gone! It was MY anxiety that caused the panic. She was totally reading me for her reaction now: when she was calm and empty, she was fine…as soon as I twitched, she read “Not SURE” and bolted.
It took me another two weeks to get that deep calm back. Meanwhile, I practiced cutting tree branches to increase my confidence in using the clippers. I also picked up the clippers many times in full view of her and left it out so she could see. When I felt very comfortable I went over to her and she let me place it on my toenail without moving, and I managed to successfully clip one nail! However, the loud cutting sound unnerved her and she tensed, but I quickly put the trimmer down before she bolted. I realized that I had built our entire relationship on respecting and trusting her, and I could no longer exert control or force with her.
I thought it was more important for both of us to maintain this new confidence, so I decided to wait and only cut when we were both relaxed, even if it took me a month to cut all of his nails. And he took more than that.
Suki left her body that year, but when she transitioned I had been able to keep my balance, control my energy, and give up when she was afraid; in this way I managed to cut all the nails at last! Even though she obviously had the amazing ability to raise her nails, she never stopped being the Master and helping me overcome my obstacles. We both walked through our fear that year.
