Kurdish culture has distinctive features that are very different from the features of Toronto. Kurdish traditions are similar to those of the Iranians. Some of these similarities include celebrating different occasions like weddings. Also, both cultures celebrate Nawroz, which is their New Year celebration. Nawroz is celebrated on the twenty-first of March. Kurds are considered moderate Muslims, hence the least observance of Islamic rules. For example, Kurdish culture allows women to work outside their homes. Unlike other Muslims, Kurdish cultures have fewer restrictions on the wearing of the hijab by women. The Kurds also have unique wedding cultures admired by many people around the world.
Kurdish marriage procedure
Unlike weddings in Toronto, three or four elderly men and women visit the brides’ home before the ceremony, as traditional Kurdish wedding culture dictates. On the first day of the visit, the visitors explain to the parents of the bride the reasons for their visit. The purpose of this visit is to inform the girl’s parents of her interest in her marrying one of their own. After explaining her reason, the girl’s father can agree or refuse to give her daughter in marriage.
When the girl’s parents show some interest, the guests ask for some water. The girl’s parents ask her to serve the guests water. The purpose of this act is to give guests the opportunity to see the girl’s stature, character and appearance. According to traditional Kurdish wedding culture, the girl is supposed to stay there until the guest finishes drinking water. If the guests are impressed with the girl, they arrange a second visit. On the second visit, the guest accompanies the man with the intention of marrying the girl.
The older guests introduce the man to the girl and her parents. This gives the young woman and the young man the opportunity to interact and get to know each other. According to traditional Kurdish wedding culture, the ceremony begins only when the man is pleased with the girl and agrees to marry her. When this happens, the elderly guests request the girl’s parents to give her daughter in marriage. When both the girl and the young man are happy and satisfied, the wedding ceremony is prepared. Unlike Toronto weddings, this wedding is prepared on the same day.

Like Toronto weddings, Kurds celebrate during the unification of a man and a woman. During this ceremony, there is a performance of music performed by traditional musicians. According to Kurdish culture, there are three categories of musical performance. This includes storytellers, minstrels, and bards. Most of the songs performed are meant to cement the love between the lovers. Some songs have an epic quality because they extol the couple as heroes and winners. According to Kurdish culture, the musical performance begins one day before the wedding.
On the actual day, just like in Toronto, the groom places a ring on the bride’s finger while the audience celebrates the occasion with song and dance. While the singing and dancing is taking place, the young man’s relatives offer presents and gifts to the girl’s parents. This serves as a token of thanks. According to traditional Kurdish wedding culture, the ceremony ends after the presentation of the shara buke, which is a shawl, which is placed on the bride’s head. The shawl should have white, yellow and red colors. Two rings are put on the bride’s finger. Following the traditional Kurdish wedding culture, the main ring symbolizes engagement, while the second ring symbolizes the husband’s right to visit the bride’s house anytime she wishes.
