yeti thaw
Last winter, there was a winter in Moab. Moab hadn’t experienced one of this caliber since 1976. The Yeti Thaw, usually held during Presidents’ Weekend in February, experienced inclement weather in 2010, until it affected the 2011 event. Take a Yeti Bike Demo , enjoy group rides, parties and the vibrant community of three Moab mountain bike companies: Magpie Adventure, Poison Spider Bicycles and Rim Tours. It’s a free event and the perfect spring party.
skinny tire festival
The road bike spans three days, looping through Arches National Park, along the Colorado River, and to Dead Horse Point State Park, which looks out into the vast void of preserved Canyonlands National Park. The Skinny Tire Festival benefits cancer survivor programs.
Extreme adventure
The Gravity Play Adventure Races open for registration on January 3, 2011. It is a mix of athletic disciplines: inflatable flatwater kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, abseiling and sailing. The mountain bike section is particularly challenging at Long Canyon.

Riding the mountain pass in the La Sal Mountains, climbing 5,500 feet in 60 miles, this event will emulate an ancient Italian tradition. Road bikers experience stunning views of the canyons below and a 12,000-foot peak above. Gran Fondo is NOT a race. The top five male and female cyclists will be recognized for reaching the top of the pass. NO PRIZES for getting back to town in record time. Security must be respected.
Moab Triathlon is NEW for 2011
TriUtah bases this two-day event in the Ken’s Lake area south of Moab. XTERRA off-road triathlon, XTERRA trail run, road triathlon and children’s triathlon.
Rockwell relay
The Rockwell Relay is a road bike race in which teams of 4 riders hit the road in a relay format and race to the finish non-stop. It begins in June in Moab and concludes in St. George.

Moab 24 Hour Bike Race
A temporary citadel blossoms in the Moab desert as teams converge to go strong in a 24-hour mountain bike race. Xavier Fane documents this race. Particularly interesting are the night shots. If he doesn’t run, consider volunteering for this event.

It’s a mountain bike festival over Halloween weekend. Get your costume, bring all your bikes.
