What is fashionable now? The truth about the trend

New sales. Hot, new, “latest” makes just about anything more attractive. Consequently, we can get sucked into the frenzy of being “with it” or having the last look, when it may not be right for us. When I offer image advice, I avoid talking about fads. I want to give you some advice that you can use for the rest of your life. If you are always excited about the latest fashions and want it, there are hundreds of magazines, websites, and TV shows that we can lose focus on and waste all of our extra time, money, and energy.

Many young women are victims of fashion. I often hear: “How cute!” when it’s absolutely horrible. Whether it’s a fad, hairdo, or hot makeup look, it may be “new,” but that doesn’t mean flattering. It may be interesting to celebrities and bone-thin models, but it is rarely attractive to someone with less-than-perfect proportions.

Trends are another matter. Fashion trends tend to develop slowly. If a trend is something that suits you, be the first to discover it and show it off! But if it’s not good for you, don’t waste your time or money. You’ll end up sitting in your closet with an unfortunate wear or two.

Case in point: One year, I bought my grandmother black leggings and an oversized black and white plaid shirt when that was the trend. I thought, “Hey, let’s show off your wonderful legs!” But she was very busty with thin legs and the outfit made her look like she was about to tip over at any moment. I have learned. It was not only inappropriate for her body type, but also for “who was she”. Lois was a classic. We went for a walk and she wore the outfit to please me, but she never wore it again. I still have a photo of her. What was I thinking?

I did the same with my A-shaped mom. I figured an oversized sweater over leggings would cover most of the A, if you understand me. And it would, if a person didn’t move. But once you walk, the diagonal line from slim ankles to wide hips that catches the fabric drop becomes immediately apparent. Although as dramatic she could carry the trend with style, the look was too current and not ideal for her body type to feel comfortable as a frequent wardrobe staple.

If a trend is something that suits you, be the first to discover it and show it off! If not, leave it in the store instead of unused in your closet.

Finally, classic clothing is always in fashion. You can’t go wrong with that. You will rarely feel embarrassed when looking back at your photos. Classic are the pieces you invest in: a little black dress, a white shirt, a raincoat, a large pair of jeans, a pair of black high-heeled shoes, a pearl necklace.

The classics are universally flattering for everyone and for any age. They will never be wrong and they will never be inappropriate. Spend money on them and they will serve you well for years to come. Add your personal style or current trend in flattering color, line, pattern, texture, and accents. That is the key to looking current AND attractive, always.
