Aviation security inspectors work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This is a division of the US Department of Transportation Aviation Safety Inspectors enforce FAA regulations governing the quality, performance, and safety of aircraft equipment and personnel. They specialize in the inspection of commercial aircraft (airlines) or general aviation aircraft (single and multi-engine aircraft used for pleasure, air taxi, industry and agriculture). Special requirements

An applicant must have a valid driver’s license. Individuals seeking maintenance inspector positions must be certified as a FAA mechanic with an Airframe and Engine (A&P) rating.

Applicants seeking operations inspector positions must possess appropriate FAA pilot certificates and ratings, as well as FAA first-class medical certificate. Also, applicants cannot have more than 2 FAA violations within the 5 years prior to their application.

Education and training

Applicant must possess at least a high school or general equivalency diploma. New aviation security inspectors must complete training programs that include studying federal air regulations, FAA policies, and inspection procedures.

Many employers prefer applicants to possess a bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety. Occupational health and safety programs include courses on hazardous materials, accident and injury prevention, and accident investigation. Many programs also include internships that can provide first-hand experience in taking measurements, handling chemicals, and assessing workplace conditions.

Certification

Certification is not required. But most employers prefer it. Certification options and requirements vary. They depend on the organization offering the certification and the area of ​​expertise.

Requirements include an associate’s degree in an occupational safety and health field or a bachelor’s degree in any area, 3 years of work experience, and successful completion of 2 exams. Recertification is awarded every 5 years upon completion of continuing education classes in health and safety practices.
