This may include laying stone items such as outdoor tiles or pavers or installing a poured surface.

• Paver machine to smooth the surface of the newly laid road or parking lot

• Excavator to prepare the ground for paving

• Rolling machines, which are large machines used to help flatten gravel or dirt surfaces

• Dump truck to haul any excess waste products and dirt and to haul gravel or stones

Becoming a paving contractor

If you want to have a career working in this field, it must be one that doesn’t mind working outdoors in any kind of weather. You should also be comfortable working on busy roads, as this type of work is done during the day when traffic passes nearby. You can also work as a flagger, so you must have experience in road safety and signaling. Working as a paving contractor, you can expect to work in busy, noisy, and dirty conditions. If you work with hot asphalt, you should be aware of the different heat levels and possible toxic fumes.
