Air fryers are all the rage right now. Everybody is talking about their crispy sweet potatoes and succulent roasts that are cooked so fast and deliciously with this new kitchen gadget. But I’m always skeptical when someone claims an appliance can do something as big and important as roasting a piece of meat, especially since I already have an oven in my home for just that purpose.

But I decided to put my doubts aside and try roasting a beef tenderloin in an air fryer. I’m happy to report that it turned out perfectly! The recipe is simple enough and I was able to make it in about half the time that it would have taken me to roast it in my oven. And the best part is that it’s still super flavorful and juicy.

Before getting started on the actual roasting process, it’s crucial to note that not all cuts of beef are created equal and some are better suited for roasting than others. This is especially true for tougher cuts of beef like rump roast and chuck roast that can be tough and require longer cooking times to reach a nice, tender consistency. But for air frying, the tender beef tenderloin cut is perfect. It cooks fast and gets a nice, crisp crust that’s so good you could eat it on its own.

It’s also important to note that all air fryers are different and cooking times can vary, so be sure to reference the instructions for your specific model. And if you’re unsure, it’s best to always use a meat thermometer to ensure that your meat is cooked to the right temperature.

Once your roast is thawed and you’ve brought it to room temperature, you’ll want to coat it with your chosen oil before seasoning it. I prefer using vegetable oil but you can also use olive oil or canola oil if that’s what you have on hand. The oil helps the seasonings stick to the meat and makes for a more flavorful result.

After coating the roast with oil, you’ll sprinkle it with your desired seasoning blend, which in this case is a mixture of salt, steak seasoning, and paprika. Make sure to season it thoroughly so that all sides and areas of the roast are coated. I find that the more generous you are with the seasonings, the better this air fryer oven roast turns out.

After the roast is seasoned, you’ll place it in your air fryer basket and start the cooking process. I recommend preheating your air fryer for 15 minutes, which will help the meat sear quickly and lock in those juices. Then, CAREFULLY turn the beef over so that the fat side is now facing down and continue cooking for another 15 minutes or until it reaches your preferred level of doneness. After the roast is finished cooking, let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. This step is important because it allows the juices to reabsorb back into the beef and helps make it even more tender and flavorful.
