How do I get rid of dog smell from my mattress?

Is your mattress starting to smell like a wet dog? This is nothing new in the mattress cleaning business. Many people sleep with their pet dogs. Since dog hair can easily collect dirt, sweat and grime, your dog can transfer all of that onto your mattress and it will start to stink.

The first thing you should consider is getting your dog his own mattress. While they are good to sleep in, dog hair can stick to bedding and this could cause allergic reactions in other people. On top of that, you are at risk of contracting bacterial infections.

To clean your mattress and remove dog odor, follow these steps:

Step 1: Take your mattress outside, preferably to an open space. Place the mattress on a clean platform. Get a vacuum cleaner and vacuum all sides of the mattress until you can’t find pet hair. Remove as much visible hair as possible.

Step 2: Mix one cup of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, you can always substitute citrus juice like lemon juice. Mix carefully and then put it in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on all sides of the mattress. Leave it there for at least an hour. This solution will help refresh your mattress and disinfect it. Lemon juice and vinegar actually have disinfectant qualities.

Step 3 – After an hour, take a clean towel and dampen it with clean water. Squeeze out excess moisture so it doesn’t soak the mattress. Wipe the surface of the mattress with the damp towel. This will remove some of the solution you used in Step 2.

Step 4 – Release baking soda and sprinkle it all over the mattress. If you have plastic or paper wrap, use it to wrap the mattress. This will help isolate the baking soda. This ingredient helps diffuse any type of mattress odor. Apart from that, it also helps to get rid of stains and dirt.

Step 5: After an hour, vacuum the mattress again to remove any baking soda residue. Your mattress should smell good by now. But to complete the cleaning process, let it dry completely in a nice sunny spot. The sun’s UV rays can further help get rid of unwanted germs and bacteria.

Your mattress is now clean. You can take him back to his room and then put clean sheets on him.
