Fantasy Soccer – Summer Transfer Window – Part 4

The summer transfer window is set to bring big changes and an overwhelming amount of speculation, as it does every year. Below is the fourth installment in an article series examining the speculation and fantasy relevance of every possible move.

David Villa-Valencia: Villa is one of the main targets this off-season as it looks like he is destined to leave Valencia at the end of the year. Valencia’s finances have led many to believe that they will sell most of their quality players to reduce payroll and that Villa will likely get the most money in return. Villa is a quality finisher and, along with Fernando Torres, helped lead Spain to the EURO 2008 title. Villa has caught the eye of the biggest and richest clubs, and there will surely be a battle between them to determine where David will finish. Town.

Where it will end: The list has shrunk considerably, but it still has three or four worthy contenders. Manchester City are involved as they try to buy any superstar they can with their newly reached unlimited budget. Chelsea have also shown interest, but seem keen to find a striker similar to the one they are likely to replace (Drogba) and that role would probably be more suitable for Zlatan than Villa. The two biggest teams in Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are also in contention. Valencia have the mentality that if they sell him they don’t want to face him, so it would make more sense to send him to England. However, what will happen is yet to be revealed, but my bet is that Villa will end up somewhere in Spain, his home country.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Inter Milan: Zlatan has been as dominant a striker as can be in Serie A in Italy, and he has racked up a huge number of goals for Inter Milan. However, rumors have been circulating that he is looking to play elsewhere in the 2009/2010 season and is not happy with staying at Inter. This situation is one of the most difficult to decipher because there is not a lot of information available at this time. Inter would love to keep him because he is lethal in front of goal, however they have been put off by his performances on the big stage, such as his mediocre efforts in Champions League games. A striker of the immense quality and ability of his to finish off seemingly impossible goal attempts will make him a great target in the off-season.

Where it will end: If he does leave Inter, don’t be surprised if you find him at Chelsea or Barcelona. With talk of Drogba leaving Chelsea at the end of this season, Zlatan is a capable replacement and plays the same way Didier Drogba does. Barça is looking for a tall, physical power forward, and Zlatan definitely fits that profile. I feel like the only way Inter will retain his services is if there are no major changes to the front office or their head coach. With a shakeup guaranteed in both areas in the offseason, Zlatan is likely to leave and there will surely be a huge bidding war for his efforts.
