Can you be allergic to chinchillas?

Chinchillas are adorable and endearing and provide many years of owner company, but can you be allergic to chinchillas? A not so well known information is that the chinchilla discharge proteins that make a person allergic. It is the expulsion in the form of urine and saliva and, in addition, they shed their fur once every few months.

The reason a person becomes allergic to chinchillas is mainly due to the hay and dust of the chinchillas. If you are allergic to hay and dust, it is not possible to buy a chinchilla as a pet. It is a well-known fact that most protein-releasing warm-blooded animals have fur on their body. Furry animals like to lick their fur and the saliva, once dry, will deposit the protein floating in different materials in the house.

Some who are unfamiliar with such things will have to deal with their allergies and eventually give away their pet chinchilla. It is not only the owner who has to put up with the inconvenience, but also the poor chinchilla. They will have to go to their hay and dust bath first and then sooner or later they will have to be rehoused. It can be traumatic for the pet chinchilla, not just the owner with the allergy.

You can become allergic just by exposure to the chinchilla and rubbing your eyes and fur is common. A relevant detail that we must know is that allergy can take weeks, months or even years to occur and there are cases in which some owners may need an inhaler to cure their respiratory problem. If you are one of those people who eventually becomes allergic to hay and dust, then relocation is a must for your pet.

To avoid developing long-term hay and dust allergies, there are many ways and covering your chinchilla’s cage with a sheet by having its own closed area with a closed door is one of them. If dust needs to be applied, stay away from fans, then wrap a sheet around it and close the bedroom door for a little over ten minutes as it will allow the dust to settle.

Apart from the necessary safety measures, you can buy your pet chinchilla a certain brand of bath sand that reduces the impact of dust when flying. While it is helpful to reduce dust, it is not profitable for those with few resources. The steps you take to reduce your pet chinchilla’s allergies are all essential steps, but if he eventually develops allergies or is severely allergic to hair and dust, the best option is to go home.
